SUPERB VALUE

"This is fresh and medium-bodied, with hints of mocha and smoke lacing the dried raspberry and black cherry fruit. A balanced red, showing spice and citrus accents on the creamy finish. Drink now through 2018. 20,833 cases made. –AN " (WS)

"The 2014 Primitivo shows tight lines and a solid consistency. The bouquet opens to dark fruit tones of dried blackberry and Morello cherry with light nuances of leather and tobacco at the back. The wine delivers good depth and a chewy, ripe style that is very indicative of the greater school of Puglia wines.

Cantele is another exciting winery that represents the energy and the innovation that comes with a new generation. The Cantele family, including siblings Gianni, Paolo, Umberto and Luisa, are symbols of the Salento new wave. They show careful attention to the Negroamaro grape (they even make a Metodo Classico sparkling wine with the variety that is very interesting) and experiment with Verdeca, Fiano, Primitivo and international varieties such as Chardonnay. I had the opportunity to visit the estate this year and learned of the many growth possibilities they hold for the future. For example, they own an abandoned Masseria (rural farmstead) that would make a fantastic visitor's center or boutique hotel. I know that the next time I come to visit they will have new ideas to pursue. Cantele is a winery that emits a feeling of constant movement and forward-momentum." (WA)

Winery Notes:
Primitivo is a red varietal grown principally in Puglia. Once highly prized for blending, in the 1990s it was subject to an EU vine reduction program to combat overproduction. The total Primitivo vineyard area fell from 42,000 acres in 1990 to just under 19,800 acres in 2000, despite the fact that it has become much better known to consumers. The emergence of the Salento IGT appellation expanded Primitivo’s notoriety as a value wine, taking the varietal beyond the much smaller Manduria DOC.
