"What could even surpass the sensational 2013, the 2014 No 3 from Jim Binns checks in as a blend of 89% Syrah, 8% Mourvedre and 3% Viognier that saw 54% whole clusters and will see a full 23 months in 60% new French oak. There will be a scant 450 cases of this nectar and it comes from three top sites: Larner Vineyard, White Hawk and Alta Mesa (Mourvedre). Sporting an inky, vibrant purple/blue color, it offers insane levels of purity and focus in its crème de cassis, crushed violets, exotic spice, floral and chocolate-laced aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied, layered and impeccably balanced, with tons of minerality and graphite on the finish, this quintessential Cali Syrah will benefit from short term cellaring and knock your socks off over the following decade or more.
The quality coming from Andremily shouldn't shock anyone, as winemaker Jim Binns has been one of the forces behind the quality coming from Manfred Krankl's Sine Qua Non for a number of years now. While I reviewed his 2014s from barrel for this report, readers shouldn't miss his 2013s, which were reviewed earlier this year. The only downside here is the tiny quantities. In addition to the classic No 3 release, the Mourvedre is a new wine that delivers in spades.
"The 2014 No.3 opens with striking, captivating aromatics. Ample and beautifully textured on the palate, the 2014 exudes richness yet also retains a terrific sense of energy and precision for such a big wine. Mocha, espresso, plum, graphite, lavender and smoke all open up effortlessly in the glass. This is a fabulous wine with a bright future. The blend is 89% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre and 3% Viognier. Sold in three bottles box set at $249.00 for each pack." (VM)
