"Always a favourite of mine, the 2013 La Nieta is still extremely young and oaky, but this vineyard planted under the winery in the village of Páganos on very shallow soils that cushion the effect of the weather (even the excess of rain in 2013), produce a very consistent wine. Right now the nose is dominated by oak-related aromas: toasted wood, dark chocolate and espresso coffee; if you're patience enough, you can see the violets and acid berries underneath. And the palate shows a fresh wine with great acidity, a very fine texture and a long, mineral, tasty finish. I wouldn't touch this for a couple of years, because it should make a beautiful bottle of Rioja. It should have a very long life in bottle. 4,000 bottles produced.
2013 has produced less wine, but of very good quality. La Nieta was the star again." (WA)

Viñedos de Páganos is an exclusive winery located in the medieval village of Laguardia, which arises in the Rioja Alavesa subarea, close to 600 meters in altitude, an environment surrounded by dolmens, archaeological sites, chapels and ancient medieval churches.
The cellar shares space with the exceptional vineyard called El Puntido, an old word meaning ‘staircase landing’, similar to the shape that this lands forms between the Sierra de Cantabria and the Ebro River depression. The area is under the influence of an Atlantic climate with continental nuances, sheltered from the cold winds from the north owing to the Sierra de Cantabria. The soils of this estate, calcareous clay or clay-loam in texture with a high mineral presence, give the vineyard, and therefore the wine, a unique mineral character of outstanding personality. Under this soil one can find a sandstone subsoil where the roots are perfectly integrated. Tempranillo is perfectly adapted to these soils, and expresses in its wines the terroir in which the vineyard is planted.
The cellar is surrounded by the vineyards of El Puntido, a tenuous slope of 25 hectares oriented toward the south, trellised on espalier planted in 1975 with Tempranillo variety on a clay-loam soil with a subsoil of sandstone. Thanks to a limited yield and a careful artisan harvest El Puntido wine is produced.
La Nieta is very near, a small plot of 1.75 hectares in a loamy and shallow soil in which the Tempranillo variety is also planted. It has a poorer soil quality than in El Puntido and a totally different microclimate. In this plot after forcing the vine to a low vigour and a natural production, fruit of a high quality is obtained, with which the wine La Nieta will be produced.

Founded in 1998 by Marcos and Miguel Eguren, the objective of this cellar, carved in the cold rock, in the very depths of the vineyards, is to produce great wines that represent the intrinsic characteristics and personality that the union of climate, soil and grapevine varieties determines.
