"A well of deep, pure blackberry, blueberry and black pepper aromas greets the nose in this red. Silky in texture, this stays spicy and firm. Sangiovese. Best from 2018 through 2026. -B.S." (WS)
"The 2013 Il Carbonaione is compelling. That's the good news. The bad news, if you can call it that, is that the 2013 is going to take the better part of the next decade to be at its best. Black cherry, plum, licorice and menthol are all fused together. Today, the 2013 is rich, deep and unctuous, with superb depth and striking balance. Opening a bottle anytime soon, though, is likely to be a mostly academic exercise, as the Carbonaione is so primary, it almost tastes like a barrel sample! " (VM)
"Wow. The mouthfeel, depth and length to this red is really phenomenal. Full body, ultra-fine tannins. Blueberry, blackberry and chocolate character. Goes on for minutes. The composure and substance to this wine is amazing. This is the best ever Il Carbonaione. Will improve for years but taste it now." (JS)
100% Sangiovese di Lamole (a naturally low yielding clone of Sangiovese) from 70 year-old vines grown at 1,350 feet above sea level with west-southwest exposure. The juice is macerated with the skins for approximately 12 days. Daily manual punch-downs ensure greater concentration of flavor and tannins. The wine is aged in Allier, Vosges, Nevers and American oak barriques for 12 months, and refined in bottle for six months.
Il Carbonaione has an ample bouquet dominated by the scent of blackberries and currant. This is a full-bodied, warm, rich wine with an exuberant personality. The tannins are balanced and soft, yet chewy and full of vitality, supporting a persistent and lingering finish. This is a legendary, iconic wine. Recommended with red meats such as Bistecca alla Fiorentina (grilled T-bone steak), venison and aged cheeses.
