"Deep and powerfully complex, with an enticingly supple texture. Aromas of blueberry, chunky chocolate and smoky herb combine with layered flavors of huckleberry, cracked pepper and lico- rice, lingering toward big but plush tannins. Drink now through 2028.—T.F." (WS)

"The 2013 Syrah IX Estate may turn out to be better. It’s not as complex from a nuanced standpoint as the 2012, but it has possibly greater intensity than its sibling. Its blackberry fruit, charcoal, acacia flowers, grilled meats and beef tartare notes are all beautifully presented in a pure, succulent, opulent style. This is amazing sTuff, and a great example of a singular style of Syrah from Napa Valley. Drink now-2028.

This is an incredible lineup of wines from Ann Colgin, her winemaker Allison Tauziet and Bordeaux winemaking consultant Dr. Alain Raynaud. Of course, they have David Abreu, the superstar of viticulturalists, looking after their vineyards which, based on those I’ve seen at Tychson Hill and the IX Estate, are meticulously and fastidiously maintained as well as drop-dead beautiful terroirs. The 2012s, which I reviewed from bottle before, have gone from strength to strength at the top of the qualitative pyramid.

The 2013s had just been bottled, so I was blown away by how amazingly they performed. Of course, 2012 was a great vintage, but 2013, as I’ve already indicated, is probably the finest vintage for Bordeaux varietals I’ve ever tasted in my 37 years of experience in Napa Valley." (WA)

"The 2013 Syrah IX Estate is another total pleasure bomb. Sweet dark cherry, plum, mint, spices, chocolate, and expressive floral notes all flesh out in the glass. Massively tannic when it was young, the 2013 has acquired soft contours over time. With air, the 2013 could be drunk young, but it will be even better with time. This seamless, succulent Syrah has it all going on." (VM)

Winery Notes:
From low yielding clonal selections originating in the Cote-Rotie and Hermitage regions of France, the IX Estate Syrah is characterized by the Old World aromatics of the Northern Rhone and a remarkably nuanced bouquet of cured meat, pepper, blackberry, coffee and acacia, graced with a black floral uplift. Its voluptuous texture, savory palate with mouthwatering tannins, and dense black color is truly irresistible, smooth and expressive. Considered “one of the most unique Syrahs being made in California today.”
