BIG MERLOT FOR THE CABERNET DRINKER!!
"Lastly, the 2013 Merlot is a beauty. Rich, concentrated, fleshy and fat, this wine from their own vineyard displays plenty of berry fruit, judicious use of toasty oak and a long finish. This is sexy, plump and succulent. Drink it over the next decade or more." (WA)
After an amazing year like 2012 we were not sure what the 2013 harvest was going to bring. It was hard to believe that conditions could rival, even better the 2012 vintage. We had a hot but not scorching summer, followed by a beautifully warm dry fall. . With these perfect fall days the grape flavors developed progressively, with the cool nights slowing down sugar accumulation. We took our time to ensure each lot of Merlot was picked at a perfect level of ripeness.
This Merlot comes from higher elevations on Spring Mountain. It is picked in the dark hours of the morning to ensure it arrives cool and undamaged. The wine spent 22 months in French cooperage, 60% new. Months before bottling, during our assemblage tasting, we determined that 5% Cabernet Franc, from a similar elevation on Spring Mountain, perfected the blend by adding more backbone and spice.
With a deep purple core and rim this wines appearance suggests intensity. The aromatics pop with big dark plum, crushed violets and white chocolate. Some black pepper and clove/nutmeg spices are also apparent. This wine is extremely opulent and plush on the palate with flavors of black cherry, tobacco and coffee. Although this is one of the most tannic Merlots we’ve produced the tannins are chalky vs biting and in balance with the beautiful mountain acidity. Even though the aromatics suggest approachability, this wine will benefit immensely by aging it over the next 10-11 years (2025-2026).
