"Still a bit reticent, but with a structured core of cedar and dusty oak-laced currant and dark berry flavors. Touches of dried herb and sage lead to a tannic finish, but this will only get better with time. Drink now through 2026. 18,210 cases made. –JL" (WS)

"Exhibiting both stuffing and style with plenty of rich oak in league with its deep and well-sustained ripe currant fruit, Mondavi's Oakville bottling is a fleshy, full-bodied Cabernet that stays deftly away from outsized astringency and, while certainly built to age nicely, it shows an unmistakable sense of winemaking polish and crafting. That is not to say that it begs short-term drinking, and it is, in fact, some years away from reaching its considerable best. Manners aside, it deserves a half-decade of patience and will age gracefully for at least twice that time. Reviewed: August 2016" (CG)

"Unless you go way down into bulk wines, $40 is pretty much the entry price of Napa Cabernet now. It’s too bad, but the glory days of the 2005-2007 vintages are over and this is the new reality. That’s why Mondavi’s 2012 Oakville Cabernet is a remarkable value. It could be labeled “To Kalon Vineyard” as the vast majority (usually 99%) comes from that legendary soil. But that would pose a problem for Mondavi. You see, their $145 Reserve Cab is now labeled as “To Kalon”, so labeling their Oakville bottling as such would devalue the Reserve, not to mention the $200 Schrader wines, or $350 Paul Hobbs from To Kalon.

So here we are with a fantastic wine, from an historic vineyard, at an entry level price. I have been through a case of the 2005, and today that wine is drinking better than ever. All signs point to the 2012 being an even better wine, so stock up on this one. I know I will.

The 2012 Mondavi Oakville Cabernet is surely one of the best Napa wines current available in its price range which is normally around $48 to $52 a bottle and now on special at L.A. Wine Co. for a bargain discount price of $39.95.

If your answer to the question of, “do you appreciate Napa Cabernet and its elegance,” is a positive, then do not miss trying this 2012 especially now that it’s on special.

I find myself in definite agreement with the Connoisseurs Guide when they rate the wine a 92+ and state that, “This wine strikes a captivating balance between power and finesse showing its classic Oakville Cabernet style. The delicious core of layered black fruit is imbued with rich mocha and toasty vanilla with subtle traces of fresh bay and black pepper. Its dense, rich mouth feel, complexity and long finish will delight your palate.” There is still a decent amount of youthful fruit in the wine and if you like in you Napa Cabernets this quality (as I often do) it’s now ideal for present consumption. If you desire more of the softer, velvety quality then give the wine another4 or 5 years. Or better yet purchase several bottles and try it (over time) both ways.
