"The 2012 Corimbo is pure Tempranillo from the Burgos part of Ribera del Duero (La Horra, Roa, Sotillo, Gumiel); it was fermented in stainless steel tanks, went through malo in French oak vats and matured in some 10-20% new oak barrels, mostly French but with some 20% American. After some 14 months, the wines are transferred from barriques to oak vats where they stay for a further six months. The color is bright ruby with a nose that shows red fruit and nicely integrated oak, with a spiciness that shows not only the usual vanilla and cinnamon, but also some more exotic aromas reminiscent of curry, plus plenty of wild flowers and Mediterranean herbs. 2012 was extremely dry, but there was around 20 liters of rain in each of the months of July, August and September, which clearly provided the much needed water to balance the grapes and provide fresher wines. This Corimbo clearly shows the profile of the growing season, and the wine is more floral and a little lighter with good freshness; it's a more approachable wine. The oak is very nicely integrated and the wine is balanced, fresh and with medium body. A lighter, approachable style of Ribera del Duero. 106,911 bottles were filled in May 2014.

The winery in Ribera del Duero from Bodegas Roda in Rioja is in reality called Bodegas La Horra, as they are located in the village of La Horra in the province of Burgos, within the appellation limits. I got together with general manager Agustín Santolaya to taste the current vintages and hear from him what they are doing and where they are going. Some 160,000 bottles are produced currently, but the project is designed to reach 300,000 bottles.

They started in 2008 with an idea to do a Tempranillo in a different zone for Rioja. After visiting many different zones (Arlanza, different zones within Ribera del Duero), they finally settled in La Horra. As they always want to work with old ones, they found a family with 40 hectares of vineyards and with no winery. They created a joint-venture with them, with an agreement of 40+40 years. They bought some more land, to build the winery, and it's made up of old vines and virgin soil to plant newer vineyards. In the future, they will build a newer, larger winery, as they decided to follow a step-wise approach, avoiding huge investments in one go.

The aim is to do a Ribera del Duero, not a Rioja in Ribera del Duero, but avoiding the excess ripeness, extraction and oak so common in too many wines of the region. They produce two wines, similar to what they do in Roda, a base wine of 25+ year old Tempranillo and a wine from older vineyards;, so here the wines are separated from the very begging, starting with the vineyards, vinification and élevage. They are one of the first to harvest in the zone (they might start around September 15th in this early, warm 2015). They ferment in a mixture of oak and stainless steel vats, always with indigenous yeasts. Elegant, clean and modern Ribera del Duero." (WA)

2012 is the new vintage of CORIMBO, a wine marked by a line of fineness and balance. It is wraparound and caressing. Without a doubt, it is a wine to enjoy for its elegance, its friendly character and its freshness.

A wine with a fairly long life which will evolve very well in the bottle.
