2007 Southern Rhones.....Vintage of a Lifetime!

The 2007 So. Rhone vintage was just re-reviewed at the end of February 2017 and the accolades were even stronger than upon the first bottled reviews back in 2009.

In 2008 and 2009 Parker said "It is the vintage of my lifetime for this region, and I don't say that lightly. These 2007s will also be very long-lived given their extraordinary balance. This is a truly historic and profoundly great vintage"

And now in 2017 Parker said "In my 39 years of tasting, 3 vintages stand out for their greatness and singularity...1982 Bordeaux, 1990 Barolo/Barbaresco, and 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. If there has been any revelation, it is....how steady and reassuringly the greatest 2007 Chateauneufs have evolved. So, even if some wines are still young adolescents, they provide profound drinking."

And Jeb Dunnuck, now doing the official So. Rhone reviews said "...in most head to head tastings between the 2007s and 2010s, I almost always prefer the 2007s. They have lived up to the hype and are some of the most incredible wines in the wine world today."

"Silky, with a beautiful beam of kirsch running through pepper, incense, black tea and melted licorice notes. The long, supple finish has good latent grip, while maintaining its perfumy elegance. Drink now through 2020. 290 cases made." (WS)

"The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret du Sabon is jaw-dropping good, and tops out on my scale. Crazily perfumed and complex, with layers of kirsch, crushed flowers, incense, beef blood and garrigue, it hits the palate with massive depth and richness, thrilling purity of fruit and a seamless texture that needs to be tasted to be believed. I'd happily drink bottles today, but given its mid-palate depth and no shortage of tannin that emerges on the finish, it will have no issues evolving through 2027.

A brilliantly run estate, Domaine Roger Sabon covers close to 44 acres that are spread throughout the appellation, and the wines have been made by Didier Negron since 2001. This retrospective focused on their top cuvee, the Secret du Sabon, which is a field blend of roughly (the exact blend is a "secret") 90% Grenache with the balance other permitted varieties (from 100-year-old vines), that-s aged all in 600-liter barrels. While the first released vintage was 1998, they also bottled a small amount in 1990, 1995 (the only one I've tasted? superb) and 1996." (WA)

"Inky ruby. Exotic aromas of black raspberry, boysenberry, cassis, floral oils and incense, with notes of licorice and sassafras coming up with air. Fleshy, seductively sweet red and dark berry liqueur flavors stain the palate, with floral pastilles and succulent herbs providing added complexity. Very rich but also compellingly lithe and balanced, with superb finishing clarity and sexy floral and spice character. I'd bet on this wine being delicious throughout its life." (VM)

"Such a beautiful sense of purity here in the fruit, it is impossible not to be drawn in to take another sniff and sip. Sweet, fresh, ripe and juicy, with loads of peppery fruit and silky, elegant, refined and polished textures that just do not want to quit. Still young, it is impossible not to see this is simply a stunning wine. 98 points - Tasted May 1, 2016" (JL)
