2007 Southern Rhones.....Vintage of a Lifetime!

The 2007 So. Rhone vintage was just re-reviewed at the end of February 2017 and the accolades were even stronger than upon the first bottled reviews back in 2009.

In 2008 and 2009 Parker said "It is the vintage of my lifetime for this region, and I don't say that lightly. These 2007s will also be very long-lived given their extraordinary balance. This is a truly historic and profoundly great vintage"

And now in 2017 Parker said "In my 39 years of tasting, 3 vintages stand out for their greatness and singularity...1982 Bordeaux, 1990 Barolo/Barbaresco, and 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. If there has been any revelation, it is....how steady and reassuringly the greatest 2007 Chateauneufs have evolved. So, even if some wines are still young adolescents, they provide profound drinking."

And Jeb Dunnuck, now doing the official So. Rhone reviews said "...in most head to head tastings between the 2007s and 2010s, I almost always prefer the 2007s. They have lived up to the hype and are some of the most incredible wines in the wine world today."

"Silky and deceptively ripe, with stylish incense, black tea and raspberry hints up front that turn darker and denser through the finish, where fig paste and graphite notes fill in. The long finish really gains steam as it moves along, letting shiso leaf and mineral notes play out. Very stylish. Best from 2010 through 2025. 361 cases made.–JM " (WS)

"One of the most profound wines in the vintage is unquestionable the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee les Grenache de Pierre, which is 100% Grenache, from sandy soils in the la Crau lieu-dit, raised all in concrete tanks and bottled unfiltered. Its deep ruby color is followed by an incredible bouquet of black cherries, black raspberries, licorice, dried herbs and garrigue. Deep, layered, gorgeously concentrated and ultra-fine, with sweet, ripe tannin and an incredible elegance, drink this sensational juice anytime over the coming 10-15 years." (WA)

"Bright ruby. Ripe black raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by sexy floral and incense notes, with hints of baking spices and minerals adding lift. Juicy, sweet and focused, offering vivid red fruit flavors and a strong undercurrent of tangy minerality. Packs serious punch but there's also a pinot-like elegance to this wine that's intriguing. The pliant, lush finish echoes the red fruit and spice notes and refuses to let go of the palate. (Eric Solomon Selections, Charlotte NC" (VM)

Winery Notes:
Blend:
100 year old Grenache (100%)

Soils:
Pure sand

Sourced from the pure sandy soils in the Crau area and vineyards around Pignan, our father Pierre was always loyal to his parcels of 100 year old Grenache. This cuvée pays homage to his devotion to Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s flagship variety. Hallmarked by elegance and delicacy, this wine shows finesse perfectly poised by strength of character.

Harvest, winemaking :
We pick the berries in several batches to allow perfect grape ripeness. We do the first rigorous selection by vine and again in the winery to make sure we get the best quality grapes. 100% de-stemming depending on the vintage. We use gentle extraction techniques, fermentation lasting about three weeks to one month with a cold maceration at the start. The must is then heated to around 28°C.

Maturation :
Approx. 18 months ageing is carried out in cement vats. To help retain lively aroma and flavour, our wines aren’t filtered or fined.

Keeping :
It can be enjoyed young, but it’ll take much longer for it to reveal its true character and will stay remarkably fresh for at least 20 years after bottling.

Annual production :
Between 180 and 300 cases of 12 bottles are made when the vintage allows us to.

Tasting note :
Lovely blood-red colour with crimson edges. Its powerful nose is reminiscent of basalt, tobacco leaf with cooked fruit notes and juicy prunes. Powerful structured palate, rich and rounded with flavours of fresh strawberry compote, raspberries, cherries tinged with thyme, wild juniper and violet rockrose.
