2007 Southern Rhones.....Vintage of a Lifetime!

The 2007 So. Rhone vintage was just re-reviewed at the end of February 2017 and the accolades were even stronger than upon the first bottled reviews back in 2009.

In 2008 and 2009 Parker said "It is the vintage of my lifetime for this region, and I don't say that lightly. These 2007s will also be very long-lived given their extraordinary balance. This is a truly historic and profoundly great vintage"

And now in 2017 Parker said "In my 39 years of tasting, 3 vintages stand out for their greatness and singularity...1982 Bordeaux, 1990 Barolo/Barbaresco, and 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. If there has been any revelation, it is....how steady and reassuringly the greatest 2007 Chateauneufs have evolved. So, even if some wines are still young adolescents, they provide profound drinking."

And Jeb Dunnuck, now doing the official So. Rhone reviews said "...in most head to head tastings between the 2007s and 2010s, I almost always prefer the 2007s. They have lived up to the hype and are some of the most incredible wines in the wine world today."

"Very inviting, with lush blueberry, fig sauce and blackberry fruit aromas and flavors, backed by alluring spice and black tea notes. The long, round, juicy finish is stylish as well. Drink now through 2010. 3,333 cases made.–JM " (WS)

"The opaque purple-hued 2007 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Terre d’Argile (a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Mourvedre) reveals a big, sweet perfume of creosote, licorice, blackberries, and kirsch. Full-bodied with layers of fruit and a remarkably long finish, it can be enjoyed now and over the next 4-6 years.

Always one of my favorite stops on my Rhone Valley trips, Domaine de la Janasse is run with incredible passion by Christophe Sabon, his sister Isabelle, and his father, who showed up nearly half naked as he was bringing in some white grapes on the torridly hot day I visited. What this family operation has achieved over the last decade is nothing short of remarkable considering the breadth of wines made, from their Vin de Pays, which are among the finest made in France, to their world-class Cotes du Rhones and Chateauneuf du Papes. While this estate is at the top of its game, it is not content to rest on the status quo and continues to push the envelope. Their 2008s are among the finest wines of the vintage, and as the following tasting notes and scores indicate, their 2007s are out of this world. The 2008 reds are surprisingly strong across the board at Domaine de la Janasse. There is no Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues or Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin in this vintage, but the other cuvees are all noteworthy. 2007 is the greatest vintage I have ever tasted of Domaine de la Janasse – and that’s says something given the amazing wines produced here in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2006." Winery Notes:
Domaine de la Janasse has quickly become one of the Superstar estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Led by the dynamic brother and sister team, Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, the estate combines the best of both traditional and modern techniques to craft a collection of truly riveting wines from “simple” value-priced VDP’s to benchmark Châteauneufs

The estate was founded in 1976 by Aimé Sabon, Christophe and Isabelle’s father, who still oversees the vineyards and farms organically. The property consists of 80 Hectares, spread over as many as 70 different parcels throughout the appellation.
